[11-05-2026] Orange County – Unsecured Construction Cargo Impales Pickup on 405 Freeway
Published
Westminster, Orange County – A Toyota pickup was impaled by long wrapped construction materials on Wednesday morning, November 4, 2026, on Interstate 405 within the California Highway Patrol’s Westminster division jurisdiction. The cargo escaped another vehicle, speared through the pickup’s windshield, and passed above the seats toward the dashboard.
The driver sustained only minor injuries, according to CHP. Investigators have not released the exact milepost, the total number of vehicles involved, or the source of the cargo.
CHP Westminster used the crash as a public safety warning on cargo securement. “A crash this morning on the I-405 freeway serves as an important reminder of the dangers of improperly secured cargo,” the agency posted on its Instagram account.

How Can a Truck Accident Lawyer Help
California Vehicle Code § 23114 prohibits transporting cargo in a way that lets it fall, drop, or escape, and § 23115 requires covers on loads of garbage and loose material. Commercial carriers must also comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, which require cargo inspections before and during the trip. When an object spears a cab and causes injury or death, several parties can be liable: the driver hauling the cargo, their employer under respondeat superior, the shipper, and sometimes the manufacturer of the straps or tie-down equipment. A truck accident lawyer can request cargo manifests, driver hours-of-service logs, maintenance records, and Caltrans traffic camera footage before they are destroyed. Victims have two years from the crash to file a personal injury claim under CCP § 335.1, and families of anyone killed can bring a wrongful death claim under § 377.60. A fast evidence lockdown is what separates a paid car and truck crash claim from one that stalls.
