Traumatic Brain Injury

An injury of the brain is an injury of the entire person. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) victim’s life can be impacted by memory loss, difficulty speaking, motor skill degeneration, and can even impair the ability to breathe. When a TBI occurs as the result of another person’s negligent or reckless act, the victim deserves compensation.

Broadway Law Firm is a Los Angeles personal injury firm with extensive experience representing brain injury victims and their families. We fight to recover much-needed compensation for medical bills, lost wages, physical and emotional harm and all the other damages sustained by TBI victims. Our traumatic brain injury lawyers are known for our aggressive yet strategic approach, which has led to significant verdicts and settlements for our brain injury clients across Southern California.

What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

There are two types of TBI: closed head injury and open head injury. Either type of TBI can leave the victim with permanent, catastrophic damage that renders them unable to fully function in society and in need of extensive and ongoing therapy and treatments.

Closed TBIs are more common. They occur when an outside force impacts the head, but the skull is not broken, fractured, or penetrated. Closed TBIs can happen under a wide range of circumstances; a person’s head hitting the windshield during an auto accident is one common example.

Open TBIs occur when something penetrates or fractures the skull. The damage from an open TBI is often localized, with damage occurring along the route that the penetrating object traveled.

Brain Injuries Happen Far Too Often

The Brain Injury Association of America says every year approximately 1.5 million people in the U.S. suffer a traumatic brain injury. About 5.3 million people are currently living with a TBI and 50,000 people die of a TBI annually.

Top Causes of TBIs

According to the CDC, nearly half of all TBIs are caused by slip-and-fall accidents. Most of those falls occur in children 14 and younger and adults over 65. Getting struck by heavy objects is the second leading cause of TBIs.

Broadway Law Firm handles traumatic brain injury cases stemming from all types of events, including:

  • Car and truck accidents (rollovers, head-on collisions, etc.)
  • Motorcycle crashes
  • Bicycle and pedestrian accidents
  • Falls
  • Contact sports accidents
  • Blasts and explosions
  • Construction site accidents

Not all brain injuries are immediately obvious. What seems like a concussion, for example, could worsen over time and indicate more extensive brain trauma. Sufferers may experience fatigue, depression, impulse control problems, anger, or even drug abuse. Anyone exhibiting symptoms like these should consult with a doctor as soon as possible.
